Earthquake Damage Detection in Buildings and Early Warning Based on Wave Travel Times
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes a novel method for structural health monitoring of buildings, currently being developed at the University of Southern California for future applications in earthquake early warning systems. The method uses data from vibrational sensors and is based on detecting changes in travel times of waves propagating through the structure. It is an intermediate scale method, which can point to the part of the structure that has been damaged using data from relatively small number of sensors. The method is illustrated using earthquake response data in two buildings damaged by earthquakes. The benefits to society from early warning systems of damage in structures, before physical inspection is possible, are discussed, both from the point of view of safety and from the point of view of avoiding needless service interruption.

Recent Advances in Wave Travel Time Based Methodology for Structural Health Monitoring and Early Earthquake Damage Detection in Buildings
Recent advances in the development of a wave travel time methodology for earthquake damage detection in buildings, for use in rapid assessment of structural health following an earthquake, are reviewed. Its main advantages over the modal methods are the insensitivity to the effects of soil-structure interaction, local nature, and robustness when applied to real structures and strong earthquake ...

The ability to monitor the health of an instrumented structure, detect damage as it occurs, and issue an early warning during or soon after the earthquake (or some other natural or man made disaster), and before physical inspection is possible, has significant potential benefits in reducing loss of life and injuries, in emergency response, and in recovery following the disaster. The timeliness ...
متن کاملEarthquake Damage Detection in the Imperial County Services Building III: Analysis of Wave Travel Times via Impulse Response Functions
The majority of structural health monitoring methods are based on detecting changes in the modal properties, which are global characteristics of the structure, and are not sensitive to local damage. Wave travel times between selected sections of a structure, on the other hand, are local characteristics, and are potentially more sensitive to local damage. In this paper, a structural health monit...
متن کاملImpulse Response Analysis of Layered Building Models and Lessons Learned for Structural Health Monitoring
Reduction of structural stiffness due to damage leads to increase in travel time of seismic waves propagating through the damaged part. Wave travel times through the structure can be effectively measured by tracing a pulse radiated from a virtual source, generated by deconvolution of the recorded vibrational response to earthquake shaking at different points in the structure (e.g. on different ...
متن کاملSystem identification of buildings by wave travel time analysis and layered shear beam modelsSpatial resolution and accuracy
A previously explored method for one-dimensional structural system identification and earthquake damage detection in buildings, based on measuring wave travel time through the structure and its changes, is formalized, and its spatial resolution and accuracy are analyzed. The method identifies the velocity of propagation of shear waves in the structure as function of height. The wave travel time...
